We live in a fast-paced world where being efficient is always the goal. We are so used to shortcuts. We want many things to be automatic.
Many times, we don’t even stop to spend time getting to know other people. Anyone who’s worked in the HR department of any company knows how recruiters just glance at their interviewees before they make their quick judgments. Some of us even apply this to people we just met.
In psychology, that’s called thin slicing, or making inferences about someone based on very little information (thin slices). Whether we like it or not, this way of dealing with others is here to stay in many aspects of our existence.
That is why it’s really important for us to know how to present ourselves well. In this article, we present three tips that help us enhance our image as men in the modern world.
Eat Right And Start Working Out
As men, we want to look fit and physically able to face challenges. No, you don’t need to have bulging biceps and washboard apps, though they are an added advantage, especially in the dating and mating department. Just make sure that you keep your weight in check and that your stance is good.
You can do that by eating right and exercising regularly. Count your calories and add more plants into your diet. Meat is good a few times a week but too much does other undesirable things to your arteries and heart. If your budget allows, enrol yourself in a gym or fitness club. This way, you gain access to machines and equipment that better target specific muscle groups.
Stock Up On Wardrobe Essentials For Men
When we talk about personal image development and management, the clothes that we wear are probably among the first things that come to mind. Whether we like it or not, we often get judged based on what we wear. Mismatched shirts and pants are going to leave a not-so-good impression during interviews. A plain tee in a formal event is a recipe for disaster. Because of this, it’s nice to have all the essentials in your wardrobe. You should have at least a set of formal wear, several casual clothes, and some pieces for the outdoors which you can get at online shops like Kryptek. The type of clothes that you own is a reflection of the diversity of situations that you are ready for.
Keep Your Biases In Check
We probably don’t need to tell you that nowadays, people are becoming more and more aware of their rights and are more ready to grasp concepts like social justice. With this comes the influx of progressive values. Don’t get us wrong; there is nothing wrong with these. In fact, these values are necessary in order for us to better uphold civil liberties.
However, many of these values are very novel even to the most aware of us. For example, some forms of racism are so ingrained that we are not even aware of them, but others may be and they might call us out for it. Unhampered gender expression led to gender identities that we’ve never seen in the open before. In the face of these things, we should learn to respond with more respect and less defensiveness.
Image development and management is a must if we are to succeed in the modern terrain. This requires just a little conscious effort and dedication.
